As many of you know, Catherine Hardwicke will not be returning to direct the second movie in the Twilight Saga, New Moon, and in her place will be Chris Weitz.  Speculations have been made as to why Hardwicke is not returning and in a recent interview with “Entertainment Weekly”, she finally spoke out as to why. 

According to Hardwicke, she was in the middle of dinner with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Paris (jealous anyone?) when she received a phone call from Summit Entertainment.  They apparently offered her “more money than [she] or anyone in [her] family has ever seen” to direct New Moon, but the offer was coupled with a modest budget and a constraining timeline.  Hardwicke reportedly did not feel comfortable to direct the sequel under those restrictions and declined the offer.

“I was devastated,” Hardwicke says,  “I really did feel a strong connection to the people around the world that liked the movie — and to Stephenie and the actors. But I just didn’t think I could make a good movie under those circumstances.”

So there you have it—let us just hope that Chris Weitz will be able to produce a movie up to expectations by New Moon’s release date of November 20, 2009.

Sorry guys but it’s not Midnight Sun <insert sigh here>.  Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight, has written her own book related to the Twilight Saga.  Twilight:  Director’s Notebook, will offer an inside look, from the director’s perspective, on bring the book to the big screen.  The book should contain information on the storyboard process, casting, costume decisions and behind the scenes photographs.  Look for it in stores on March 17^th!

Stephen King, acclaimed author of such novels as The Shining, Pet Cemetery, and The Green Mile, offers his insight on the pop culture phenomenon that is Twilight.

“Both Rowling [JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter Series] and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."

"Somebody who’s a terrific writer who’s been very, very successful is Jodi Picoult [author of The Tenth Circle]. You’ve got Dean Koontz [author of the Odd Hours], who can write like hell. And then sometimes he’s just awful. It varies. James Patterson [author of Sail] is a terrible writer but he’s very very successful. People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it’s very clear that she’s writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It’s exciting and it’s thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because they’re not overtly sexual. A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that’s a shorthand for all the feelings that they’re not ready to deal with yet."

The question I have for you is this:  Do you agree or disagree?  Is he a bit too harsh or has he hit it right on the nail?  All I know is, good writer or not…thank goodness she gave us the Cullens.

Twilight has been given the Libby Award by Peta2.com for being “The Most Animal-Friendly Movie” of 2008!  Now, some of you may ask…really? Animal Friendly?  Twilight?  The movie about vampires who eat animals?  Well friends, it’s true!  Peta2.com chose Twilight because the movie promoted vegetarianism through Bella’s eating habits (she only eats vegetarian foods) and Stephenie Meyer’s cameo appearance (she is served a vegetarian platter).  Even though the vampires consume animals, Peta2.com felt that no one in the audience was persuaded to go out and kill animals in order to quench that vampire thirst in the back of their throat.  Peta2.com also expressed their wish that people would follow Bella’s example of being a vegetarian after seeing the movie.  How about it fellow Twilight obsessers?  Did Bella’s eating habits have any effect on your own eating habits?

Alright, to calm everyone’s fears about Leah Clearwater’s actress in New Moon, I’d like to say that I have come across a source stating that there will be NO Leah in New Moon. We can shove out panic aside until Eclipse, because Melissa Rosenberg has stated that she did not write Leah into the script.

This being said, there will be no Brenda Song or Vanessa Hudgens in the next movie!

That’s right.  Little Dakota Fanning has grown up and word has it that she might possibly be portraying the sadistic blonde vamp, Jane.  Reports say that she has met with the director and has been reported saying, “I really hope it works out - It would be really cool to be a part of that. I'm a big fan."  Well fellow members of OTD…what do you think?  All I know is that if I were her I’d be practicing my evil eyes in the mirror every morning preparing myself to give Rob Pattinson the look that will bring him to his knees.  J

                Speaking of Robert Pattinson, Daniel Radcliffe, (the-boy-who-lived), seems to also have a certain soft spot for the heartthrob.  Pattinson and Radcliffe have worked together on the Harry Potter films and are often compared to one another.  What does Radcliffe say of this comparison?  “He [Pattinson] is much prettier and can be much more charming. And he can do that thing of being sultry and sexy”, further adding that, "Rob can just sort of stand there and look at something and start to smolder. And I just can't do that."   It seems fangirls are not the only ones who notice Rob’s sultry eyes!

Dread
JACKSON!  That should be enough said right there, but I’ll elaborate more! It’s a horror flick that marks his first lead part in a film.

Adventureland
Kirstin Stewart stars in this film set in 1987, about a college grad who forced to spend his summer working at a low-rent amusement park. Kristin plays the love interest of this cotton candy making grad. Sundance picked this film, so if you can go to the festival later this month – have fun!

Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick – everyone’s favorite (or not so favorite; I have met people who dislike the character) Jessica Stanly – landed the much-contested lead roll, opposite of George Clooney! Based on the ’01 novel of the same name this film is directed by Jason Reitman.

Pandorum
Hello again Cam! Another movie! Wow, you’re busy! He describes the movie as a disaster in space. Expect it to hit theatres in September!

Welcome to the Rileys
Can’t get enough of KStew? Here she is again! With dance skills! You might expect her to fall of the stage, but in this film she has a lot more grace, playing a troubled exotic dancer who helps to bring a could back together after a tragedy.

Little Ashes
Why, hello Rob. How we have missed you...That’s right Robert Pattison is in this much anticipated indie flick.

Go ahead…let out that fangirl squeal of delight!  Lovable Taylor Lautner will be returning as our favorite furry friend, Jacob Black.  Below is Chris Weitz’s, director for New Moon, official statement:

“I'm very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer.

The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film.”

Along with this statement, Stephenie Meyer also stated:

“I'd just like to add that I was very much a part of this decision. My first priority was always what was best for New Moon—what was going to give us the best possible movie. I'm truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. Fans have been eagerly waiting, and debating, the future of the film’s version of Jacob Black.  Taylor Lautner has been spending extra time in the gym in order to bulk up for the role and apparently the work has paid off!  Get ready to see a hunky, manly, and sexy Taylor Lautner to grace the movie screens.  Let the Edward vs. Jacob battle begin!
